How to Brew the Perfect Mushroom Tea
What You'll Need:
- 1-2 teaspoons dried mushrooms (or contents of 2-4 mushroom supplement capsules)
- 2 cups (16 oz) filtered water
- Coffee or spice grinder
- Small pot or saucepan
- Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
- Optional: honey, lemon, ginger, cinnamon, or your favorite tea
Brewing Instructions:
- Prepare your mushrooms: If using whole dried mushrooms, grind them into a fine powder using a coffee or spice grinder. If using our capsules, simply empty 2-4 capsules into your pot. Reishi and Turkey Tail are difficult to get into a powder form due to their woodiness. Turkey Tail will grind into more of a fluff than a powder. Chaga is best broken up into small pieces. It can dull the blades in your grinder rather quickly. Most other dried mushrooms powderize very easily.
- Add water: Pour 2 cups of filtered water into a small pot and add your mushroom powder.
- Simmer gently: Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Do NOT boil vigorouslyβgentle heat preserves beneficial compounds. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Strain: Remove from heat and strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into your favorite mug.
- Enhance (optional): Add honey for sweetness, lemon for brightness, fresh ginger for warmth, or steep with your favorite herbal tea.
- Enjoy: Sip slowly and mindfully. Many people find mushroom tea has an earthy, woodsy flavor (yet not "mushroomy") that's surprisingly pleasant.
Pro Tips for the Best Brew
- Grind fresh: For maximum potency, grind your mushrooms just before brewing.
- Low and slow: Gentle simmering (not boiling) extracts the most beneficial compounds without degrading them.
- Save the grounds: Don't throw away the strained mushroom powder! Add it to smoothies, soups, or broths for extra nutrition.
- Blend with coffee or tea: Mix mushroom powder into your morning coffee (try our Lion's Mane Coffee Recipe) or favorite tea for an easy wellness boost.
- Make it a latte: Add frothed milk (dairy or plant-based) and a touch of maple syrup for a creamy mushroom latte.
- Batch brew: Make a larger batch and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently or enjoy cold.
- Start small: If you're new to mushroom tea, start with 1 teaspoon and work your way up as your palate adjusts.
Flavor Pairing Ideas
Enhance your mushroom tea with these delicious combinations:
- Morning Blend: Pair with green tea, ginger, and lemon for an energizing start
- Evening Blend: Combine with chamomile, lavender, and honey for ultimate relaxation
- Master Blend: Mix with chai spices (cinnamon, cardamom, clove) for a warming, aromatic brew
- Earthy & Rich: Add cacao powder and vanilla for a decadent mushroom hot chocolate
